The best way to understand what it feels like working here is to experience our summer internship programme. Every year, we hold two four-week programmes in June and July – both designed to give you an intensive experience of our culture and the kind of work we do.

We work hard to make sure they are as useful and as stimulating as possible: the schemes are organised by a committee of associates and partners who know what it takes to succeed as a solicitor, and influenced by our current trainees and past interns, who have been in your shoes and know the best way to introduce you to Ashurst.

The main focus is on giving you a realistic taste of life as a lawyer. You will rotate through different divisions and be supervised by a qualified solicitor who’ll get you involved in real work. You’ll also work our normal office hours, which could mean staying beyond 5:30pm.

You will learn about our practice areas from legal training courses and introductory sessions. And to help you experience a realistic client meeting environment, we will also ask you to present a case study with your fellow interns to a panel of partners and associates There will also be plenty of opportunities to get to know our associates and current trainees outside of work.

We expect that our brightest interns will become our future trainees.

Training contracts

Whilst we hope to secure most, if not all of our trainees through our internship programmes, if you are unable to attend one, you can still apply for a training contract with us (if this is the case, please specify in your application form why you are not able to attend the summer internship programme).

A thorough induction kicks off your life as a trainee, introducing you to all the resources you will need to support your work and training. You will be assigned a Hong Kong law qualified partner or lawyer, who will act as your principal and will be your key point of contact throughout the entire training contract, regardless of your seat or location.

Be prepared for a challenge: your academic understanding of law and any previous work experience will help you overcome the steep learning curve as a trainee. On top of your legal skills, we will help you develop shrewd negotiation skills, a head for business and a deep understanding of specific industries (and more besides).


Secondments can add an extra facet to your development. We will encourage you to take one if you can: several of our trainees take a secondment in one of our overseas offices as one of their seats. There is also the opportunity to be seconded after you have qualified.

Trainees and associates who’ve experienced a secondment come back with a better appreciation of different cultures and approaches, deeper understanding of the client and finely-tuned relationship skills.

After qualification

Even partners with 30 years’ experience still have their ‘aha!’ moments. So while the training contract will have given you a solid foundation of skills and a knack for disentangling complexities, your experience will continue to evolve. Every case, client and colleague will give you the chance to set off on a new learning curve – so keep an open mind. As you strengthen your decision-making ability and grow your confidence, you will start to build strong, trusting relationships with your clients.

That’s not the end of your learning at Ashurst. Throughout your legal career (whether as a trainee or a qualified solicitor), you’ll have access to our continuous professional and career development programme, to make sure you’re properly equipped for the job at hand – and the future ahead.

After qualification

Salary & benefits

  • HK$45,000 per month for the first year of training,
    rising to HK$47,000 for the second year
    (Trainee salaries are reviewed regularly to make sure we pay the market rate)
