High-calibre international projects will open your eyes to the intricacies of modern business. Secondments will widen your worldview. Everything about the way we train you is designed to develop deftness in the way you think about challenges and an ingenuity to the way you solve them.
Whilst we hope to secure most, if not all of our trainees through our internship programmes, if you are unable to attend one, you can still apply for a training contract with us (if this is the case, please specify in your application form why you are not able to attend the summer internship programme).
A thorough induction kicks off your life as a trainee, introducing you to all the resources you will need to support your work and training. You will be assigned a Hong Kong law qualified partner or lawyer, who will act as your principal and will be your key point of contact throughout the entire training contract, regardless of your seat or location.
Be prepared for a challenge: your academic understanding of law and any previous work experience will help you overcome the steep learning curve as a trainee. On top of your legal skills, we will help you develop shrewd negotiation skills, a head for business and a deep understanding of specific industries (and more besides).
Once you join us as a trainee, we will collaborate with you to plan four seats of six months, and review that plan at regular intervals. You will spend one seat in our corporate division, one seat in our finance division and one seat in our dispute resolution division. For each, you will sit with a partner or associate, who will be the main source of your work and supervise you during that seat. Equally, there is a lot to be learned from the others you work with in the practice area. And at every step, we’ll make sure you feel involved not just in the effort behind our successes – but the exhilaration that follows too.
To assist you during your PCLL course, we will pay you a stipend of HK$50,000 in two instalments (January and September). We will also reimburse the full cost of your PCLL course fees.
Secondments can add an extra facet to your development. We will encourage you to take one if you can: several of our trainees take a secondment in one of our overseas offices as one of their seats. There is also the opportunity to be seconded after you have qualified.
Trainees and associates who’ve experienced a secondment come back with a better appreciation of different cultures and approaches, deeper understanding of the client and finely-tuned relationship skills.
Even partners with 30 years’ experience still have their ‘aha!’ moments. So while the training contract will have given you a solid foundation of skills and a knack for disentangling complexities, your experience will continue to evolve. Every case, client and colleague will give you the chance to set off on a new learning curve – so keep an open mind. As you strengthen your decision-making ability and grow your confidence, you will start to build strong, trusting relationships with your clients.
That’s not the end of your learning at Ashurst. Throughout your legal career (whether as a trainee or a qualified solicitor), you’ll have access to our continuous professional and career development programme, to make sure you’re properly equipped for the job at hand – and the future ahead.
