Bring your own perspective - then expand it

High-calibre international projects will open your eyes to the intricacies of modern business. Secondments will widen your worldview. In fact, everything about the way we train you is designed to develop deftness in the way you think about challenges and an ingenuity to the way you solve them.

This is where it begins

There’s a place for every background, interest and academic pursuit at Ashurst. The only difference will be the route you take to get here.

Ahead with Ashurst

In the first year of your university degree and keen to find out more about law in the City and whether it's right for you?  Our Ahead with Ashurst programme offers a blend of work experience, mentoring support and training to give you the tools you need to make career decisions and ace your applications.

Our online training portal is designed specifically for you with sessions on commercial awareness, application and interview advice and more  and is available for  use over the coming months.

Those who've won a place on the programme will also be the first to be considered for campus ambassador positions and have priority early consideration for vacation scheme places.

You can apply online from 1 September 2016 (applications close on 8 January 2017).

Vacation schemes and Campus Ambassadors

The best way to understand what it feels like to work here is to actually work here! Every year, we hold three vacation schemes – two four-week summer schemes and a single one-week scheme in the winter – each designed to give you an intensive experience of our culture and the kind of work we do.

We work hard to make sure they’re as useful and as stimulating as possible; in fact, we organise the schemes along with a committee of trainees who’ve been where you’ve been and know the best way to introduce you to the firm.

On the winter scheme, you’ll spend time in one department, and over the summer scheme, you'll spend time in two departments, being supervised by a qualified solicitor who’ll get you involved in real work. You’ll learn about our specialist areas by attending workshops and exploring a case study that’s based on a recent transaction.

There’s also a chance to get involved in team-building events to experience the way we work together, and social events to get to know our associates and current trainees away from the bustle of daily life.

We are also recruiting Campus Ambassadors to represent and assist the firm in promoting their graduate programme to potential law and non-law students.

Law school

All our future trainees attend The University of Law, Europe’s largest and the UK’s longest-established specialist provider of legal education and training. If you’ve not completed a law degree, you’ll study the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) before moving onto the Legal Practice Course (LPC+).

The GDL can be taken at any branch of The University of Law; however, most of our future trainees choose to join a cohort of fellow Ashurst trainees at the Moorgate branch.

Our LPC+ course is unique to Ashurst and is also run at Moorgate. Before you get your teeth into it, you’ll take part in a two-week induction jointly run by us and The University of Law, designed to help you get to grips with the firm and, just as importantly, to get to know your fellow trainees.

The course is tailored to the practice areas key to our firm and so as you might expect, the modules are chosen for you. We also designed an "Ashurst as a business" module, where you'll learn from leaders within our firm about our strategy and the role you will play in delivering its success.

Law school

For the Graduate Diploma in Law (GDL) and Legal Practice Course (LPC), we offer scholarships that cover your course fees and provide £8,000 per year towards the cost of maintenance (£7,000 if you choose to study the GDL outside London).

We also offer a £2,000 interest-free loan, repayable by instalments once you start your training contract.

If you achieve a first-class honours degree having accepted our offer of a training contract, we will award you a prize of £500.

A £500 bursary towards language tuition is also available.

Training contracts

A thorough induction kicks off your training contract, introducing you to all the resources you'll need to support your work and training.

In collaboration with you, we plan four seats of six months, and review that plan at regular intervals. Each seat starts with a handover and training, complete with technical expertise, so you know exactly what to expect. At least one seat will be in either our banking or securities and derivatives practice areas, and most trainees choose to do at least one other transactional seat. There's a wealth of options to consider and we will also encourage you to undertake a secondment to one of our growing offices or to a valued client.

You’ll be supervised by a partner or associate who’ll work closely with you and provide guidance, reviewing your progress as you go along and helping you to pinpoint your successes and develop in areas that need work. Equally, there’s a great deal to be learned from the others you work with in the practice area. And at every step, we’ll make sure you feel involved not just in the effort behind our successes but the exhilaration that follows them too.

We will be accepting applications to start in September 2019/ March 2020 from 1 October 2016. There will be two windows to apply for training contracts with the firm. These will be from 1 October 2016 to 31 December 2016 and then again from 1 May 2017 to 31 July 2017.

The two windows are to ensure you have an opportunity to apply at a time that best suits you.  The early window is for those candidates who feel ready to apply for a training contract straight away.  If you have applied for and are planning to undertake summer vacation scheme later in the year, you should wait until the summer to apply.  You can apply at either time if you are a penultimate year student or beyond, whether you are studying law or a non-law subject.

Secondments

Whether it’s to a client or one of our international offices, secondments are, in our eyes, a pivotal aspect of your development. We’ll encourage you to take one if you can. Trainees and associates who’ve experienced one come back with a better appreciation of different cultures and approaches, understanding of the client and the way they work, finely tuned relationship skills and feedback on their experience that in the past has included the words “invaluable”, “mind-blowing” and “uplifting”.

After qualification

Even partners with 30 years’ experience still have their "aha!" moments. While the training contract will have given you a solid foundation of skills and a knack for disentangling complexities, your experience will continue to evolve. Every case, client and colleague will give you the chance to set off on a new learning curve – so keep an open mind.

Our global skills development programme, along with regular updates to your legal expertise, will hone your ability and knowledge, and we’ll continue to give you a broad range of work after qualification to help you avoid over-specialising too soon.

At key stages in your career, you can take advantage of our formal development programmes. These offer you coaching and tailored training that will boost your business development and leadership skills.
